1.2.5 Installation Problems
If you had trouble during the installation, here are some things to consider:
-
Installation CD refuses to boot: Make sure the BIOS is set up to boot from CDROM
first. If this is the case, your CDROM drive may not be able to boot from CD. Swap out
your CDROM drive with a newer model and try again.
-
No room on hard drive: Your hard drive may not be clean. You need at least 2 GBytes
of un-partitioned space on your hard drive to install Cogsys. If you want to add Cogsys
to a hard drive and leave an existing operating system on the hard drive, contact the programmer
at russ@eccles.psy.ohio-state.edu. To delete existing partitions,
do this: 1) Boot from the CD. At the `boot:' prompt, type `linux rescue'. Choose
your language, then mouse type, then `skip' the section which mounts your hard drive. You
will see a `#' prompt. Type `fdisk /dev/hda' at the prompt. Type `p' to display your existing
partitions. Note that there are numbered partitions, which are called `primary partitions'.
Type `d' to delete a partition, `p' for `primary', then the number (1-4). Do this for each
partition. Type `p' to confirm that all the partitions are gone. Type `w' to make the
changes permanent. (Type `q' to abandon any changes.) With the `#' prompt showing,
power the computer off and on. Retry the installation by typing `cleanks' at the `boot:' prompt.
-
Cannot ping machine: If you cannot ping your Cogsys workstation, 1) Make sure the IP address is
correct for your subnet; 2) Check that you have the correct Gateway and Subnet Mask; 3) make sure
that mac.table is in the /data directory and has the correct MAC address; 4) run set_IP again.
If all the information is correct in mac.table, you may need to install a driver for your ethernet
card into the BIOS. Consult your local computer support technician.
If none of these suggestions work, make a note of the problem and
send an email describing what's wrong to russ@eccles.psy.ohio-state.edu.
